Идиома “to hit the roof”, которая стала популярной в американском английском в начале 20 века, на самом деле является сокращенной версией британской идиомы 17 века “to be up on the house roof/roof top” с тем же значением – «разозлиться, прийти в ярость». В сущности, идиома вполне живописна – вполне можно представить человека, который в приступе бешенства буквально взвивается к потолку.
